Paul Pogba has played his last game for Manchester United and will quit Old Trafford as a free agent this summer.

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick confirmed Pogba is set to miss the rest of the season with the calf injury he suffered in Tuesday’s 4-0 defeat at Liverpool, and expects United’s £89million record signing to leave for nothing when his contract runs out in June.

It brings down the curtain on a desperately disappointing second spell at United, who broke the world record to re-sign Pogba from Juventus in 2016.

Rangnick said: ‘The doctor told me it will take four weeks minimum for him to recover, and the last game is the end of May. I don’t think it’s very likely he will play again.

‘As it seems right now, he will not renew his contract. Maybe the club or Erik (ten Hag) will not want to renew his contract, I don’t know. It’s most likely he won’t be here any more next season.’

Rangnick blamed Pogba’s last act as a United player for contributing to Liverpool’s opening goal at Anfield when the Frenchman failed to tell referee Martin Atkinson he was injured.

‘It was never part of the game plan to stand at the halfway line, even more so since Pogba was already hobbling across the pitch,’ added Rangnick.

‘He should have lain down or sat down, but he was trying to hobble behind the referee and tell him he’s injured. We were effectively one player down and still attacking high up.’

Rangnick confirmed Cristiano Ronaldo will be in the squad to face Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday after missing the Liverpool game following the death of his new-born son.

Ronaldo and his partner Georgina Rodriguez announced the news on Monday night and the forward returned to training on Wednesday.

Rangnick also offered his support to Harry Maguire after the under-fire United captain and his family were the victims of a bomb threat.

Cheshire Police were called to Maguire’s home on Thursday and specially trained explosive dogs searched the garden and surrounding area.

Rangnick said: ‘I only got to know about this terrible, terrible thing on Thursday afternoon and I haven’t been able to speak with him. It’s another bad sign of the crazy world we’re living in. I feel sorry for Harry. He knows everyone is behind him.’

Maguire even received a dig from team-mate Eric Bailly after the Liverpool defeat. Bailly replied to an Instagram post urging Rangnick to play him with Raphael Varane instead of Maguire against Arsenal by writing ‘please’ alongside a praying emoji.

Rangnick said: ‘If it’s true, that should not happen in a football club, no matter in which league.’
